The long-awaited Babalu Tacos and Tapas will be opening Monday June 16th at 2115 Madison Ave in Overton Square. They will serve authentic, gourmet tacos and Spanish style tapas with a southern twist. They also have a long list of specialty drinks and tequilas, and will have a beautiful outdoor patio with a bar spanning the inside and outside.
Babalu is famous for its guacamole, made fresh at tableside. This all-time favorite has been voted Mississippi Magazine’s Best Appetizer for the past three years. Most recently, Food Network Magazine voted Babalu’s Carne El Cerdo Taco, a pork belly taco with citrus-chipotle barbecue sauce and peanut slaw, the tastiest taco in Mississippi. In addition to handcrafted blue hull corn tacos with chef-inspired fillings, the restaurant is also known for tapas made from scratch and signature cocktails made with hand-squeezed juices. Babalu is a repeat winner of Jackson Magazine’s Best of Jackson awards, including Best Outdoor Dining, Best Margarita, Best Happy Hour and Best Place for a First Date.
“The more time we spend in Overton Square, the more anxious we are to open,” said Bill Latham, co-executive vice president of Eat Here Brands. “The atmosphere and fun experience that customers expect when they come to Overton Square compliment the Babalu concept and menu. We have taken our time to finalize decisions in order to ensure that our staff and infrastructure will allow us to provide world-class service and excellent cuisine to everyone who walks in our door. It has been an exciting process, and we couldn’t be happier with the result.”
The Babalu leadership team consists of general manager Jake Miller, regional manager Jay Roberts and executive chef Tim Antignane. Miller is a Memphis native with an extensive culinary background, most recently serving as a chef instructor at L’Ecole Culinaire in Memphis. Roberts is a seasoned restaurant manager with more than 30 years of experience, most recently serving as the market partner at P.F. Chang’s China Bistro establishments in Tennessee and Alabama. Antignane comes to Babalu with more than 10 years of experience in the food-service industry, most recently working as the operations manager and executive chef at the family-owned restaurant and bar Automatic Slim’s in Downtown Memphis.
As part of the grand opening events, Babalu is partnering with ArtsMemphis and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, both of whom will receive portions of the restaurant’s opening proceeds.
Their hours will be Mon-Sat 11am-11pm and Sun 11am-10pm.
